Cigars and Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute, cigar smoking causes cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung. Even cigar smokers who do not inhale are at increased risk for cancers of the mouth, throat, and esophagus because the smoke comes in direct contact with the mucous membranes.
Heart & Lung Disease
Regular cigar smoking is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and aortic aneurysm. Risk increases with frequency, duration, and depth of inhalation.
Nicotine & Addiction
A single large cigar can contain as much nicotine as a full pack of cigarettes. Nicotine is highly addictive. Even occasional cigar use can lead to dependence and difficulty stopping.
Secondhand Smoke
Cigar smoke contains many of the same toxic and carcinogenic compounds as cigarette smoke. Exposing non-smokers, especially children and pregnant women, to secondhand cigar smoke increases their risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness.
Pregnancy
Tobacco use during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, low birth weight, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). There is no safe level of tobacco use during pregnancy.
